London's Next Step

The Royal Docks is leading the way in the transformation of the Thames Gateway.

It is already home to London City Airport, the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre, the first phase of the £500 million Royals Business Park, the University of East London Docklands Campus and the award-winning Thames Barrier Park.

The University of East London has recently completed a major expansion of its Docklands Campus, including a new Business School, Knowledge Dock Centre and Student Village. A new £100 million waterfront community at Royal Quay is nearing completion.

The Royals Business Park has planning consent for 146,000 m2 of offices and 9,000 m2 of retail and leisure and is set to become one of London's largest urban business parks.

Silvertown Quays, the exciting £1.5 billion flagship mixed-use scheme including 5,000 new homes and Biota!, the world-class aquarium, has received the green light following the confirmation of planning approval and the completion of legal agreements.

ExCeL London has recently been acquired by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) and plans are underway to add significantly to the existing exhibition space and provide major new conference facilities.

Minoco Wharf has received outline planning permission for a residential-led scheme providing 2,600 homes, shops, restaurants, community facilities and a new lock and marina, the first to be constructed on the Thames for 50 years. At the Albert Basin, plans for One Gallions, the Thames Gateway's first zero-carbon development, have been submitted to the London Borough of Newham.

Further investment in the Docklands Light Railway is stimulating regeneration. The extension from Canning Town to London City Airport is complete and the Woolwich Arsenal extension, which will connect King George V station to the heart of Woolwich Town Centre, is due to open in February 2009. In 2010 a further extension to Stratford International will begin operation and the DLR network upgrade to three-car capacity is scheduled for completion.

These developments form part of a wider picture for the Royal Docks set to provide more than 14,000 new homes and 16,000 new jobs over the next 10 to 15 years.
